Artist Statement

Drawing is my first love. It is a continuously evolving romance between my inner life and the world around me. It was my first breath. It is also my commentary on the human body, the tension between curvature and straight lines. My favorite drawing medium is graphite on Reeves BFK paper. I dance when I draw. I want the viewer to experience that same connection between touch, vision and rhythm.

Stories are my second love. All of my art has a narrative drive, even if the piece appears abstract. The stories are about my inheritance as an American white woman, and about how I question the way that heritage has been imposed on me and defined me.

My collages are the result of my drive to immerse the mark-making of drawing into the body of the paper itself. I make the paper out of antique Victorian fabric; wedding gowns, mourning gowns, baby quilts, etc. The forms are created from contrasting colors of fabric in the paper pulp that I pour directly onto the glass. I also layer on whole pieces of fabric. The paper pulp smells strongly of the people who lived their lives in contact with the fabrics. I want the work to evoke the life cycle of the people who once wore the clothing or slept under the quilts.

My abstract painting is about letting go and leaping into a joyful use of color.
